The power of good coding and Google

Maybe I've mentioned this before in an earlier blog entry, but I just am so amazed! Google is picking up on so much more than it ever has on our site before. I made some key changes suggested by Brian Getting, such as using Cascading Style Sheets, and updating all Metatag information. I got very specific on each page using my keywords, and in Miva, I am customizing keywords for each product. IT'S WORKING!

For two years I got no traffic off of Google, some from Yahoo! and MSN, and this was crushing. In the past two months, my site has evolved into a site that Google rates highly now on most of my relevant searches. In many cases, quite high. My customers, more often than not, are telling me they found me off of Google vs. Yahoo!. I'm still working to get us listed on the most basic search of "red hats". As I write this we are on the first page of Yahoo! for that search. I'm pleased that Google is indexing my specific products. If a person searches for "purple pajamas", chances are that they are ready to buy vs. a person who is searching for "red hat merchandise" in general. It's thought that the more specific the search is, the greater the chance of conversion.

It's incredibly gratifying to see something be effective when it comes to Search Engine Optimization. Good coding is so important. I know I still have a long way to go. I try to go into a few pages each day to update the coding, review the metatag information, etc. This is tough to maintain when we are busy. It takes time and can be tedious. But if it's done well, it's worth the effort.
