I.E. and Firefox
Hello all. It's been a while. We've had company and I've been working some serious OT at the regular J-O-B lately. Time flies.
That doesn't mean I've been sitting around eating bon bons though. I've got plenty to do on my web site. A few weeks ago I began working on a redesign. It needed/needs to look more professional and it needs to be more user friendly. I still have a lot of work to do. What you see right now is part of a bigger picture. The rest is still sitting on the back burner in my head.
So, have I had any response to my redesign? You bet! Good? Bad? Both. That's ok. This is what I need to make it better. Yea, you're real friends will let you know when the tag is hanging out of your shirt, you've got broccoli in your teeth or your left nav bar has a weird white stripe in it. What the heck!?! I tested this and it looked just fine!
The problem appears when you open my site in Firefox but not in Internet Explorer, where I tested my work. Now, this is strictly my impression after reading the FAQ's at Firefox. Internet Explorer seems to be a little more lenient with HTML than Firefox. If you said to a group of your family and friends, "I'm going to run to the store", most of them would understand that weren't going to literally RUN to the store. But, of course, Scott (hubby) will always remind me that taking the car would be much easier.
Now let's take it a step further. If Firefox were standing there, it would not only get the impression you were running to the store, it would EXPECT you to keep your word on that. Technically, that's fair. If you're going to make a statement, you should stick to it, right?
So, where did the white stripe come from? I had a table in my left nav and, for whatever reason, had added a background color. And I had the same background color in the layer the table resides in. Problem.... the table extended down past where I told the layer to extend. Since the table had padding around it, the bottom of the table basically stuck out or extended below where the layer stopped. The padded part was white and looked like a white stripe down the left side. It was on the right side too but this is how it was described by my friends. How could I miss this?
Well, everything you read tells you to double check your work in other browsers, especially those used by your visitors. I was going to get to it but just didn't... it was on the list..?? Turns out that about 50% of my visitors use Firefox. Big mistake.
So, as a browser, I have no real preference for IE or Firefox, so don't let that get in the way of the blogging here. The idea is, checking your work in other environments is a good thing. You want to see exactly what your visitors are seeing. For me, this one will need to become a part of the routine.
In the meantime, I still have lots of work to do adding products and making changes in the functionality of my site. I'm also excited about the Javascript textbook I ordered. It's from the same series as my HTML book, New Perspectives. I've learned a lot from that book. I know, still lots to learn but I'm really curious about this Javascript thing. The book will be here Nov. 14th and I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas.
Till next time,
Sandy
